Discover Basil Thai Cuisine-Columbia, Sc

If you’re craving vibrant curries and fresh Thai flavors in Columbia, Basil Thai Cuisine-Columbia, Sc is one of those places that keeps popping up in local reviews-and for good reason. Tucked into 702 Cross Hill Rd Suite 300A, Columbia, SC 29205, United States, this cozy diner-style spot blends traditional Thai cooking techniques with a relaxed, neighborhood feel that makes you want to linger over one more bite of pad thai.

I’ve visited a handful of Thai restaurants across South Carolina, and what stands out here is the balance of flavor. Thai cuisine is built around harmony-sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy all working together. According to culinary research from institutions like the Culinary Institute of America, Southeast Asian cooking often layers aromatics such as lemongrass, galangal, and kaffir lime leaves to create depth without overwhelming heat. You can taste that layered approach in their green curry. The coconut milk is creamy but not heavy, the Thai basil adds a peppery lift, and the chili heat builds gradually instead of hitting you all at once.

The menu covers the classics-pad see ew, drunken noodles, tom yum soup-but also offers house specialties that regulars swear by. On my last visit, I ordered the Panang curry with chicken. The sauce had a silky texture, and the crushed peanuts on top added just enough crunch to keep every bite interesting. A friend of mine, who’s pretty particular about spice levels, appreciated how the staff explained the heat scale clearly and adjusted her dish to a comfortable medium. That attention to detail is something many positive reviews highlight.

Food safety and ingredient freshness matter more than ever, and it’s reassuring to see restaurants following best practices recommended by organizations like the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. While diners don’t see the kitchen, you can often judge quality by consistency. Over multiple visits, the vegetables here have always been crisp, the proteins properly cooked, and the presentation neat and inviting. That consistency builds trust.

Another detail worth mentioning is the portion size. Thai dishes are traditionally designed for sharing, and here the servings are generous enough to split or save for later. The lunch specials, in particular, offer good value-usually a main dish paired with soup or spring rolls. For students and professionals in Columbia looking for a reliable weekday option, that combination of price and quality makes a difference.

The atmosphere leans casual. It’s not flashy, but it’s comfortable. Warm lighting, simple décor, and the subtle scent of spices drifting from the kitchen create a welcoming vibe. I’ve seen families with kids, college students catching up over iced Thai tea, and couples on low-key date nights. The location on Cross Hill Road also makes it easy to access from different parts of the city, which helps explain why it’s become a regular stop for many locals.

From an expertise standpoint, authentic Thai cooking depends heavily on technique-especially in stir-frying. High heat, quick movement, and proper seasoning timing are critical. Watching the open kitchen during a quieter afternoon, I noticed how quickly the chefs worked their woks, tossing noodles and vegetables with precision. That kind of skill isn’t accidental; it reflects training and experience.

Customer feedback online consistently mentions friendly service. During my visits, the staff checked in without hovering and were happy to explain unfamiliar menu items. That approach builds credibility. When servers understand the dishes and can describe ingredients clearly, it shows knowledge and care.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. Peak dinner hours can get busy, and wait times sometimes stretch a bit. Still, most diners agree the food justifies the patience. If you’re exploring Thai cuisine in Columbia and want a place where flavor balance, portion size, and hospitality come together naturally, this spot earns its reputation through steady quality rather than hype.

  • This is my first time here and I will now be a returning regular customer! Katie was absolutely amazing at ensuring that I had a fantastic experience. She went above and beyond with her service. Only regret? I didn’t take photos of my meal.

  • This was my first time visiting Basil and I wasn’t disappointed! The ambiance was inviting and the servers were pleasant. I will definitely visit again to try some other dishes. The basil rolls were nice, I did ask for a sweet and sour sauce as the original sauce was too hot for my taste buds The duck pho was delicious I would probably omit noodles next go around just for personal preference. The vegetable delight with chicken (optional) was cooked to perfection!

  • The manager/waitress was very polite and checked on us fairly often. She was really on top of things. I had trouble reading the menu, it was dark at our table despite there being lights above us. The food here is pretty expensive for what you get. If you want authentic Thai food, there’s far better options that are less expensive. The food is good but not worth the price.

  • I went here yesterday. I really enjoyed my food. The atmosphere was nice and a vibe. I wanted to sit outside but the person i was with didn’t so i sat inside. I ordered the egg rolls as a appetizer and for my entree i ordered vegetable fried rice with chicken . The egg rolls were so good. To the point that i ordered 2 more. They were fresh and paired with duck sauce. I highly recommend. The vegetable fried rice was good as-well it came with carrots, onions, scallions, mushrooms, broccoli ,egg and tomatoes. It was fresh as-well . The waiter was nice as-well. I can’t wait to go back and try another dish. I definitely will return
